Here are our recommendations for duplicating your “inactive users” campaign from Accengage to Airship.

Accengage

Below is the generic method for targeting inactive users:

  • Go to Targeting tab > Segment and add a new “campaign segment”.

  • Add the criterion based on the Activity targeting: “last opened”.

  • Choose the recency of the data you want to use for your goals and save your segment. It is really important to use the "equal to" operator so that your message is only addressed to eligible users.

  • Go to the Actions tab > Push notifications and click on new message to create your notification.

  • Complete the form and choose your segment in "campaign segments" at the bottom of the page.

  • If everything is good, test your message and then schedule your message for a daily send.

Airship

There are several methods for reactivating inactive users: with a single send, with a journey, with automated messages.

1/ Single send with Lifecycle lists

  • Lifecycle lists are automatically generated audience lists that capture app open, uninstall, notification, and dormancy information within the past 24 hours, one week, or 30 days.

  • You need to enable lifecycle lists before you can use them in the message composer. You can do this under Settings/config or in List > Lifecycle

  • Please keep in mind that Lifecycle lists have only a set number of days to choose from 1, 7, or 30. So if a user has been dormant for more than 30 days, you can’t message them.

  • When choosing which message type to send, select the “Message” option.

  • In the first part of the Composer Setup, select your channels, then go to Explore > Lists > Lifecycle Lists.

  • Once you have selected your targets, create your message. Then add your message content, determine the delivery settings, and finalize the message look by following all the steps.

  • When you are satisfied with your message, review everything and send/schedule your message.

2/ Journey

A journey is a series of messages that are initiated by a single automation trigger. Think of a journey as a timeline, with each message in the journey separated by some amount of time. Airship sends the messages in a journey to your audience in order as long as your audience continues to meet the conditions to receive messages in the journey.

You can set events and conditions that will result in a user to exiting a journey and prevent Airship from delivering the remaining messages.

  • When choosing which message type to send, select the “Journey” option.

  • Select the trigger “Inactivity” and choose the number of days will elapse before the automation is triggered.

  • Select the options you want to apply for your automation.

  • Choose “Conversion” on the Outcome page. If you choose to skip this step, all of the messages in your Journey will be delivered.

  • Choose to target on Device properties “Push notification opt-in” > opted-in

3.png
  • Choose your message name and your channel coordination preferences

  • Compose your message and choose your delivery condition

  • Once you have reviewed your message, you can start your journey or you can add another message to enrich your inactivity journey. To do so, choose your conditions and the delay between each message.

  • You can now test your journey or activate it

3/ Automated message

Automation is a set of conditions that your audience must meet before they receive a message.

Automation is initiated by a trigger, such as a tag change or inactivity. You can further refine your audience with Cancellation Events and Conditions.

It may be helpful to think of automation as an order form for messages, or even a fulfillment of messages — once the conditions are set, Airship looks for the triggers that you define and delivers the messages according to the rules you put in place.

  • When you’re choosing which message type to send, select the “Automation” option.

  • Select the trigger “Inactivity' and choose the number of days that will elapse before the automation is triggered.

  • Select the specific options you want to apply to your automation

  • Select your channels, create your message. Then add your message content, determine the delivery settings, and finalize the message look by following all the steps.

  • When you are satisfied with your message, review everything, and start your automation.

Best Practices

  • Try to describe concisely the advantage of regularly using the application. For instance, "don't miss the latest exclusive offers", ...

  • For automated messages / Journey, don't hesitate to add a display cap at a global level. For example 3 displays maximum.

  • Use the Journey feature to easily automate multiple messages. You can create an onboarding of multiple messages to encourage users to return to the application often.

  • Pay attention to the timing of sending according to your audience and the recurrence of visits to your application. Some users may be considered inactive after 15 days, others after 3 months.

  • Finally, the use of an incentive (coupon, gift, contest...) is a good way to regain the interest of some users.
