EN - Silent push campaign

Ce contenu est également disponible en français.

This article is only for Mobile apps, not for Web as silent push notifications don't exist for web.

Purpose of sending silent push notification

For your upgrade, sending a silent push can have added value for two main reasons:

  • Cleaning the database before the upgrade

By sending a silent push notification, you will be available to identify most of the profiles that have uninstalled your app. As a matter of fact, because of this uninstall, a bounce is returned as a result of the token no longer being valid. Following the sending of the silent push, your actual profiles will be updated in your database, excluding profiles with a bounce. You can export them from our Accengage UI, in Application History.

  • Accelerate the upgrade on iOS

As you may know, the upgrade on mobile is finalized when the user has the most recent app version from the store on its device. This app version contains the transitional SDK.

On Android, the profile is created on Airship as soon as the app is downloaded on the device. However, on iOS, the profile will exist on Airship only after the launch of the SDK. This trigger may be done in two different ways :

  1. The user opens the app after the download of the new app. Then, the SDK is launched and the profile is created on Airship.

  2. The update is automatic and the user did not open the app yet. When automatic app updates are enabled, the user is not always aware that the application has been updated. The profile is not created on Airship at this step. To ensure the profile is created, you can send a silent push notification, which will launch the transitional SDK in the background, without any action from the customer.

How to do it?

Please, verify with your Account Manager that you have access to this feature before following the next steps.

Setup message

In the Accengage UI, click on “Actions > Push notifications > Create a push”.
Please complete only the following fields: name of the notification and campaign. Everything else must be left empty.

Test your Push

Please scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the test segment with your device. Then, click on “Test”. This will allow you to check that a notification does not appear on the device. If you don't see any message on your device, that means it works as excepted.
You can then go to “Help > Test tool” to check the last send (see example below). This allows you to validate that the message has been sent to your device.

Send the Message

Once everything is validated, you can add your final segment and click on “schedule”. Select the “unique” option and choose the date of your sending. The silent push will then go out as scheduled.

Here is a video to help you to reproduce those steps:
